Independence Government Affairs Specialist Patrick Flynn received the Unsung Hero award at Caron Treatment Center’s Annual Greater Philadelphia Community Service Awards Breakfast on June 7 held in Philadelphia. The award pays tribute to individuals, organizations, and institutions that have made an outstanding contribution in the ongoing battle against alcohol and drug addiction in the community.
Patrick has spoken publicly about his recovery journey from opioid use disorder, including presenting at the Independence Blue Cross Foundation’s national conference in Philadelphia in October 2018. He strives to help others looking to live a life in recovery and do his part to break the stigma of addiction, especially in the workplace.
With the support of Independence CEO Dan Hilferty, Patrick led the formation of Independence’s Someone You Know group, which offers associates a safe place to talk about their fears and triumphs as people in recovery or loved ones supporting or having lost someone to the disease of addiction.
