2023 Year in Review: Independence Blue Cross Foundation top news stories

For more than a decade the Independence Blue Cross Foundation (IBX Foundation) has been dedicated to the health and well-being of communities in southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2023 the IBX Foundation awarded grants totaling nearly $10 million through its philanthropic initiatives and as part of its commitment to:

  • Improve access to affordable primary care and behavioral health services through support to 58 Federally Qualified Health Centers, Free and Nonprofit Clinics, and mobile clinics reaching underserved populations across the region.
  • Increase educational opportunities in the healthcare workforce to expand and diversify the nursing profession with two dozen area nursing schools.
  • Advance solutions for greater health equity through workforce and care delivery models in collaboration with health systems, government, academia, and community-based organizations.

Top Highlights in 2023:

  1. Announced the appointment of Charisse Lillie as the new chair of the IBX Foundation Board of Directors.
  2. Convened the IBX Foundation Institute for Health Equity Forum, Making Change Happen, a national, 3-day forum with more than 600 business, community, education, health, and government leaders in attendance.
  3. Established Pathways to Excellence in Medicine with Penn-CHOP Alliance of Minority Physicians to address disparities in the physician workforce through a mentorship network with area medical schools for students underrepresented in medicine.
  4. Awarded scholarships to a dozen nursing schools to fund the education of student nurses from underrepresented backgrounds through the expanded IBX Foundation Healthcare Scholars Program.
  5. Announced IBX Foundation Service Scholars, a nursing education pathway program for post 9/11 military veterans to become nurses.
  6. Reinforced efforts of government and engaged health centers in Pennsylvania Medicaid and CHIP renewal requirements to help beneficiaries stay covered.
  7. Supported the nation’s first private, nonprofit health centers to pursue the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Health Equity Accreditation, providing a framework to advance equity in organizational culture, operational process, and the delivery of care in underserved communities.
  8. Hosted the Recovery Ready Summit with more than a dozen area colleges and universities to assess recovery readiness in higher education and employment.
  9. Produced Making Change Happen, a docuseries about solving health equity in the communities we serve from the views of IBX Foundation partners.
  10. Engaged nearly 12,000 listeners in 50 states and 57 countries through the release of the third season of Someone You Know®, performing in the top 25% of podcasts worldwide.
  11. Presented at national and local speaking engagements including Fierce Health Payer Summit and Modern Healthcare.

The Independence Blue Cross Foundation is leading a future for equitable health in our communities and nation. The IBC Foundation’s grant programs and the Independence Blue Cross Foundation Institute for Health Equity are advancing three areas of impact: Access to Care, the Healthcare Workforce, and Health Equity. Since inception the IBC Foundation’s most important stakeholder – the community – has been at the center of the work. By the end of 2023, the IBC Foundation will have awarded grants totaling more than $80 million to support nonprofits and research improving the health and well-being of communities in southeastern Pennsylvania.
