The Independence Blue Cross Foundation (Foundation) convened the first networking and education event for the Aspiring Physician Executives (APEx) organization on December 8. APEx is operated by Philadelphia-based medical students and aims to diversify the next generation of top-level healthcare leaders. More than 75 people were in attendance at the event, including executives from Independence Blue Cross, leaders from health care centers, and students from the schools of medicine at Temple, Jefferson, Drexel, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Penn.

The event featured a panel discussion about opportunities for innovation in leadership beyond clinical practice. Guest speakers included Rodrigo Cerdá, M.D., MPH, senior vice president, Health Services, and chief medical officer, Independence Blue Cross; Tony S. Reed, M.D., senior vice President, chief quality and safety officer, Inspira Health, past Chief Medical Officer, Temple Health; and Marisa Rogers, M.D., executive medical director, Oak Street Health. Lorina-Marshall Blake, president of the Foundation, provided opening remarks.

The Foundation’s support of APEx aligns with one of the primary objectives of the Foundation’s Institute for Health Equity to address how to better care for diverse patient communities and improve how medical students are educated to provide that care.
